The Software House was chosen to build native Android and iOS applications for WieBetaaltWat, transforming the company’s hybrid MVP into the Netherlands' leading bill-splitting app with 1 million downloads.

WieBetaaltWat successfully validated the business concept behind their bill-splitting app with a hybrid MVP.

However, mixed reviews on performance and user experience made it difficult to scale. The company needed native Android and iOS applications to deliver the quality their growing user base expected.

Partnership goal:

To build native mobile applications that would make WieBetaaltWat the Netherlands' most popular bill-splitting platform.

WieBetaaltWat

WieBetaaltWat (meaning "who pays what") is a Dutch fintech company that helps people manage shared finances. The platform splits bills for social situations, such as lunches, groceries, festivals, holidays, or household expenses.

Following its success in the Dutch market, the company rebranded as Splitser with plans to expand across Europe.

Challenge

WieBetaaltWat validated their bill-splitting concept with a hybrid MVP, but users gave mixed feedback about performance and user experience. The hybrid approach wasn't delivering the quality needed to build a sustainable business.

The company needed a development partner who could build high-quality native applications and gain a deep understanding of the business to act as an extended team. They required developers who would be proactive and contribute ideas, not just execute tasks.

Key challenges

-> The hybrid MVP app received mixed reviews in terms of performance and UX

-> Limited ability to scale the business with existing technology

-> Required native Android and iOS apps built from scratch

-> The web application also needed revamping

Without native applications that matched user expectations, WieBetaaltWat risked losing market share to competitors and missing its window to become the leading bill-splitting solution in the Netherlands.

Solution

The Software House decided to approach this as a phased development challenge, building trust through results before scaling the team.

Building an extended team

The growth of the team in charge of the development was organic and based on actual needs rather than initial estimates. The developers weren't just executing tasks. They brought ideas, challenged assumptions, and acted as co-founders in the business.

Technologies

-> Native Android development

-> Native iOS development

-> Angular for web frontend

"The most important thing is quality. The second one is seniority and the people who are not only following the tasks to do but can work as a team, together. And the third thing is a cultural fit. Although we’re a Dutch company, the Polish culture in the way of working is also a “no-nonsense” one.

These three things are the most important for us when we look for a partner – and we found all of them in The Software House."

With the help of The Software House, the company developed a powerful native Android and iOS applications.

Process

The project began with a single developer and scaled up based on the results. The team remained stable, enabling members to develop a deep understanding of the client's business.

Team composition

The team scaled from 1 to 7 specialists and included:

-> Android developer

-> 2 iOS developers

-> Frontend Angular developers

-> Backend developer

-> Design team members

-> 1 Project Manager

Phased development

1. Initial Android phase

Initially, our team consisted of just one Android developer who built the native application from scratch. We worked closely with the client to understand their business and users. Ultimately, we delivered a high-quality product.

2. iOS expansion

Following the success of the Android app, we developed a native iOS application with the same attention to quality. Two iOS developers joined the team to ensure the platform matched the polish of the Android app.

3. Web revamp and continuous improvement

We revamped the web application using Angular while maintaining close collaboration with WieBetaaltWat. The cooperation lasted over a year, with the team expanding in response to project needs.

Outcome

WieBetaaltWat transformed from an MVP into the Netherlands' most popular bill-splitting app with 1 million downloads:

20,000+ downloads in the first week after the native Android app launch

Reached 1 million total downloads, establishing market leadership

The success helped WieBetaaltWat rebrand to Splitser to expand operations in Europe
